You may be keen to know a few things about planning your train travel in this route. Coimbatore to Mettupalayam distance is about 36km. Only passenger trains operate in this route, except the Nilgiri Express (Train No:12671) connecting Mettupalayam with Chennai.

It's about 1 hour for the passenger trains and 50 minutes for the Nilgiri Express to cover this distance. For the Nilgiri Express, there is no other stops between Coimbatore Jn and Mettupalayam.

Nilgiri Express stops at Coimbatore North Jn (CBF) before it heads to Coimbatore Jn (CBE). Nilgiri Express then reverses direction at Coimbatore Jn (CBE) to head to Mettupalayam. On the way to Mettupalayam, though it again passes again Coimbatore North Jn (CBF), it doesn't stop on the way to Mettupalayam.

The other passenger trains stop at all (3) the stations between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam.

Coimbatore to Mettupalayam train route and stops:
Coimbatore Jn (CBE) --> Coimbatore North Jn (CBF) --> Periyanaickenpalayam (PKM) --> Karamadai(KAY) --> Mettupalayam (MTP)

By the way, if you are heading to Ooty, there is only one direct train from Mettupalayam to Ooty. That is the legendary Nilgiri Mountain Train (officially, the Mettupalayam-Udagamandalam Passenger, Train No:56136).

However If you travel to Coonoor, there are many passenger trains between Coonoor and Ooty. Also note, the passenger trains between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam do not operate on Sundays. Other alternatives are to take a bus connection to Mettupalayam, Coonoor or Ooty from Coimbatore.
