Bangalore to Ooty by bus :

Bangalore to Ooty by train:

Coimbatore is the nearest major station for Ooty with train connections from Bangalore. There are about 5 express trains between Bangalore and Coimbatore.

The best bet is to catch the Nilgiri Express coming from Chennai to Mettupalayam at Salem Jn. This involves some midnight transfer. The benefit is, you'll get directly to Mettupalayam from where the Nilgiri Mountain Train leaves for Ooty.
